Wind Mitigation Inspection
What is a Wind Mitigation Inspection?
Living in Florida comes with plenty of sunshine and beautiful weather, but it also means being prepared for hurricanes and tropical storms. Strong winds can cause significant damage to homes, making storm preparedness an important part of homeownership.
A wind mitigation inspection is a specialized inspection that evaluates the construction features of your home that help protect it against wind damage. The purpose of the inspection is to identify and document these features so your insurance company can determine whether you qualify for premium discounts.
Unlike a full home inspection, which examines all of a home’s systems and components, a wind mitigation inspection focuses specifically on features that improve your home’s ability to withstand high winds and severe weather.

What We Check During a Wind Mitigation Inspection
What We Check During a
Wind Mitigation Inspection
- Roof Covering - We verify the type of roofing material and determine whether it meets current wind-resistance standards.
- Roof Deck Attachment - We inspect how the roof decking is fastened to the trusses or rafters, since stronger attachment methods offer greater resistance to high winds.
- Roof-to-Wall Connection - We examine the hardware that secures the roof structure to the walls, including clips, straps, and hurricane ties.
- Roof Shape - Certain roof designs, such as hip roofs, generally perform better during high-wind events and may qualify for additional insurance credits.
- Secondary Water Resistance - We look for an additional protective barrier beneath the roof covering that can help prevent water intrusion if the roof is damaged during a storm.
- Opening Protection - We evaluate windows, doors, garage doors, and skylights to determine whether they are protected by impact-resistant materials or approved storm shutters.

Inspection FAQs
While it isn’t required for every homeowner, many people choose to have one because of the potential insurance savings and the valuable information it provides about their home’s storm resistance.
Most wind mitigation inspections take approximately 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size and accessibility of the home.
A new inspection is often recommended after major improvements such as a roof replacement, new windows, or other hurricane-related upgrades. Many insurance companies also require an updated inspection every five years.
If there is heavy rain forecasted on the day of your inspection, we may need to reschedule for another day. If the rain is expected to be intermittent or light, then there won’t be any problem with us completing the inspection as scheduled.
Every insurance company is different, but many Florida homeowners receive discounts after submitting a wind mitigation report documenting qualifying features.
